Student Expectations - Time Commitment
Example 1
Expect to spend an average of six hours per week on course. Even though this course does not have a weekly face-to-face meeting, the time commitment per week is the same as a 3 credit lecture class. Look carefully at your work schedule, school schedule, and family obligations and allow plenty of time for each.
Example 2
As an 8 week class, this will be an extremely fast paced course and students should be prepared to spend a minimum of 8 hours a week on reading and on course assignments. While you may feel that I’m throwing a lot of information at you on a weekly basis remember that in a traditional 8 week “live” course you would be coming to class for 4 hours and then spending an additional 4 hours (at least) outside of class on assignments and reading. In our online course environment my expectation is that you will be spending those 4 “class hours” on your own working on the concepts that you would usually get in a live lecture. Please be sure to budget your time accordingly!
Example 3
There are no in-person class meetings, although there is a synchronous introductory session, synchronous office hours, and synchronous online events as noted in the course calendar. As this will be a fully online course, students must be highly self-directed and motivated to complete assignments in a timely manner with limited external prompts. This class requires at least as much time commitment as a traditional face-to-face class, meaning you should schedule 6-10 hours each week for readings and class activities. This must be scheduled in a manner that ensures each student logs in to the course site at least 3-4 times per week to keep up with discussions, quizzes, and clarifications of assignments. Before registering, students should recognize the special nature of asynchronous distance learning courses and accept their responsibilities which go far beyond typical class attendance.
